Right up front: use of the r slur (and it’s repeated) is a huge turn off. Not continuing with the series or picking up anything else by this author for that reason alone.
Beyond that, the author wastes a great premise with some really poor storytelling later on. The MC progresses without seeming hardship. The climactic event happens for no goddamn reason. Then there’s an additional 2.5 hours of book after that that really belongs in a sequel and could have been used to better effect fleshing out the build up to the climax and making the progression feel more deserved.
