I love this type of mystery. This is not a YA title but it reminded me of the mystery books I read in elementary and even high school. I loved the suspense. The character development was excellent. I love this type of folk horror, “found an old book in the basement/attic/box” stories. This one had me hooked from the beginning. don’t mind the ambiguous ending at all. The ending reminds me of one of my top 10 favorites, The Other by Thomas Tryon (I did not listen to the audiobook because I didn’t like the narrator). There was a period in the third act where the main character seems a bit whiney and repeats himself. But the final act is worth it. This was an outstanding suggestion for me.
