I haven’t torn through a book this fast in a long time. Dungeon Crawler Carl hooked me immediately. Matt Dinniman’s sense of humor is sharp, chaotic, and genuinely laugh out loud funny, but it never undercuts the stakes of the story.

The concept is so unique. The whole game show apocalypse dungeon setup is wild in the best way. I loved all the game dynamics layered throughout the stats, the loot, the leveling, the achievements. It feels immersive without ever getting bogged down or overly technical.

Carl is such a strong main character, and the tone balances absurdity and brutality perfectly. I went in expecting something fun and weird, and it completely delivered.

I’m usually the person who cannot sit through an audiobook because the voices pull me out of it. That did not happen here. The narration by Jeff Hays is bold and fully committed, but it works. The character voices actually add to the chaos instead of distracting from it, which is rare for me.

I was giggling and glued to this book, absolutely refusing to put it down, while my fiancé gave me that knowing side eye. I see something shiny, I commit. Literary raccoon confirmed.

I’m already excited to continue the series.
