How do they keep hitting it out of the park like this?

I really thought we’d have passed the “jump the shark” moment, by now, but despite the presence of a literal jumping shark wielding a flamethrower, this series manages to keep raising the stakes while still keeping me invested in all the characters and their personal tragedies and victories.
