I can’t believe I have let this series sit on my TBR for as long as I have! What a gem!
It’s insta-attraction (which I enjoy) but it doesn’t feel as if the relationship develops super quickly. Though, yeah, it’s definitely no slow burn. The love interests are obvious from the beginning but they do a bit of dancing around each other and Simeon does have to put in a little bit of work to make Angel trust and accept his own growing feelings.
I love that Angel isn’t perfect. He does have some issues with impulse control and his people skills are questionable at times. Then there are the f-bombs. But he is also loyal, protective, smart and both strong and vulnerable. Simeon obviously is perfect. He is patient (because yeah, as a vampire time is on his side) and funny and the touch-him-and-die vibes are coming of him in spades.
They are adorable together! They communicate like mature adults, no sign of the dreadful miscommunication and/or making assumptions tropes.
The world-building is solid, fantastic even, but I can see why some reviews mention the repetitive writing style. Usually details are good but at times there are so many details it feels a bit cluttered. In situations where the tension was high I kept thinking: “Enough with the descriptions and explanations, I need to know what’s happening right now!” 😁
But it wasn’t really an issue, I loved everything! The main characters, the side characters, the romance, the steam, the world, the magic system, the general vibe, the background stories, the murder mystery and, not to forget, Joel Leslie’s voice acting!
