I don’t know how anyone can think they’re going to write a great book about the apocalypse when they have no capacity for understanding social change. Besides the endless clichés and violence which is often sexual, the author felt the need to describe every female as either the most beautiful he’s ever seen or ugly. Mens physical characteristics are apparently not important. Countless times in the 5 books, which I forced myself to finish, he says all men are driven by their hormones and can’t resist women. This silly outdated excuse for his male characters to drool over women got old halfway through the first book.
Since I bought the books together and was out of the country when i started the series, I slogged on through.
Every relationship is hetero except for some very bad men who rape little boys. Disparaging comments were made about anyone who suggested the possibility that someone might not be straight. there’s also the old “oh no, she doesn’t like girls, women just like to say that to get men interested.”
I’ve read many scifi books from the 1950s that were far more progressive.
The violence was over the top. the non- white characters felt like they were thrown in a nod to a society the author does not understand. The science was mostly absent. Even AI is dressed up in “the most beautiful woman” he’s ever seen.
You might think your going to at least see some redemption for characters you’ve known for five books. I hoped until the bitter end.
Nope. No redemption.
if you’re one of the proud boys, this book series might be for you. Otherwise, I’d skip it.
