Book Review: The Butcher’s Masquerade (Dungeon Crawler Carl 5) by Matt Dinniman
4.75/5 stars rounded up. This fifth installment in the DCC universe follows the general storyline of the earlier books but has much more to offer than the general grind of the game play. There are still quests and challenges, level-ups, and strategies; however, there are also moments of real humanity that seep into this depressing, heartbreaking world. We feel for the Crawlers and the NPCs, and we root for them to find a way out of this life of enslavement. This story adds a great deal of backstory to the factions and the earlier Crawls. We learn more about what the ninth floor holds in store for the Crawlers, and we can only hope that the top 50 will survive the Butcher’s Masquerade of the title.
Once again, Jeff Hays gives a masterful performance as the narrator of the audiobook. I give it 5/5 stars! I know I am just part of the choir with this series of books, but I cannot recommend it highly enough. The entertainment factor alone is worth reading, or re-reading, this wonderful story featuring Carl and Princess Donut. Highly, highly recommended!
