The author is going for a gritty Sin City type feeling, and it works well enough. The narrator helps a ton with this. The writing is serviceable, but edgy. Which is fine. However, it also drops some heavy ick every now and then. And the author has a real “men writing women” problem going on. I couldn’t take the cringe anymore after this description of a character: “Melissa was a kind of used up looking woman of 40, with brown hair and blue eyes. She had enough makeup to look bangable without looking good.” Oof.
