I’m halfway through Book 2, but I wanted to leave a review before I forgot these points. I’ll come back and edit this review if I feel like it’s missing anything by time I get to the end of the series.
I enjoy the story and the worldbuilding that went into it. I enjoy the multiple POVs.
Editing needs to be done on this series, though. There are inconsistencies – vehicles are mostly referred to as “carts” but are occasionally referred to as “cars” for no apparent reason, when this society doesn’t know or use that name. There is some mind hopping in scenes, where we jump from one person’s POV to someone else’s and back again. People know someone’s name when they were never introduced to each other and there’s no reason to think they should have this info. Weird word choices are made (someone will “pace down a hallway” or “pace out of the room” when that isn’t what pacing means). Anachronisms are sprinkled throughout, like the use of “seconds” when they don’t have clocks and tell time by the passing of the sun.
I wish a thorough editing had been done of this series before it was produced in audiobook form, bc I know how expensive audiobooks are, and know that to rework the books and then have the audiobooks reproduced would be prohibitively expensive. This author isn’t doing themselves any favors by skipping a thorough editing before releasing books, and should absolutely invest in one (maybe multiple rounds) before releasing their next books.
The storyline is good enough – and original enough – that I am continuing to listen, despite the errors pulling me out of the story.
So if you aren’t someone who picks up on these kinds of inconsistencies, then I’m sure you’ll really enjoy this series.
If you’re someone who does notice mistakes…this may not be the series for you.
