I came across this book collection and decided to give it a try. I’ve ended up really liking this collection. I really like post EMP stories (apocalypse books in general), however, I had taken a break from them for a while These types of books can often devolve in to an overly oppressive story as one loathsome thing after the next happens.

This book is the opposite of the books I’ve typically read about end-of-the world as we know if scenarios. It’s more upbeat without all of the depression. There is zero language, graphic violence or sex in this book. For those that like the books full of that, this book will be too PG for you. For those that like a good story that can also be listened to in the car with all the family regardless of most ages,, this is a great option. The narrator is excellent as well.

The five book collection is not too deep since it’s mostly about three people and a dog. I feel like things out in more rural areas would be less Lord of the Flies so quickly regarding the breakdown of society. I 100% think the large cities would turn into mass chaos and panic quickly. The smaller towns and areas I think will go a more civil approach at least to begin with until word spread and actual hunger sets in.

I also think they would run into a lot more people when traveling. There is little mention of ever seeing many people. Lots of people would be stranded out on the roads and walking towards the next town right after an attack like this. Large cities would see a mass exodus of people out on the road. I think all of the people out on the roads asking for, or demanding, help would be more of a potential safety concern than the vehicles making it tough to drive on the freeways at time.

I feel the gas situation, at least during the first five books, is also a little unrealistic and too easy. I think gas stations would be one of the first places gangs and groups take up shop to protect and guard. I don’t think they would be mostly void of people. The series does not have the main characters run into many people during the first couple of weeks, and when they do, they are usually not the kind of people you want to chat with.

Overall, not an amazing book, but a good clean read that has gone by quickly for me. I’ve enjoyed the first five books and hope the rest will be even better.
