Funny in parts, but overall the story was pretty uninteresting. The other books have been amazing so far, but this one really stands out as being the worst. The more open-world war was less engaging, and the RPG elements were toned down a lot. It seems that some of the vibe was perhaps intended to be more heart-rending, but it just made the book less fun. The external non-crawler characters made the story more complicated than it needed to be. I’ll continue reading the series, I also plan to re-listen from book 1 at some point, but I’ll be skipping this one. Hopefully the next book will improve and get back to what made the previous DCC books so good.
