I loved the premise, and found Chester to be hysterical for most of the book, with phenomenal voice acting. But the story is painfully cliche (Mary Sue protag(s), “save woman I just met”, etc) and some of the chapters are almost nothing but dry game mechanics revolving around examining loot or power levels. And the characters themselves are very one dimensional. The men might be puddle deep (they come across like 14 year olds), but the women are flat as a pancake in terms of personality depth (maybe what a 14 year old who’s never had a real conversation with a woman might think one’s like).

I finished this one, mostly by letting it play in the background, but I don’t think I can stomach another one. It’s like the Candy Crush of literature; some of the antics are entertaining but don’t expect much in the way of substance.
