This book is a typical post-apocalyptic road story but there is no emotional realism. The father is former Ranger /special ops but this was not a book written by someone familiar with military operations. After EMP the characters decide it is critical to leave asap and gave themselves one night to get ready. No info about what had happened, no thoughtful packing, no map planning before they drove away. The father owns a hunting / fishing shop but they did not see one person in their town just two near-do-wells! A female school pal joins the ride and although her mother is likely dead, she is cheerful and helpful, not completely devastated. Sorry but this book has the emotional depth as a puddle. Oh well everyone is dead let’s drive from Colorado to Maryland with zero planning!! Lots of preaching about guns, God and how America lost its way without stepping up the run for office. One minute the author boasts how smart they were to be prepared, with no pity for those without Navy Seal experience/ military training. Then the author blames the government for not being able provide for dying citizens. It is a shame because it could have been so much more
