So, I just finished the fourth book of the DCC series “The Gate of the Feral Gods”. I haven’t reviewed any of the previous books yet, so my thoughts through to the end of this book are reflected.
When I purchased the first book, it was just to pass time. I had not yet heard of Matt Dinniman, and I rarely stray from sci-fi / fantasy titles. Boy have I been missing out.
This series has it all. Puzzles, intrigue, beautifully described scenes, character wit, sass, and plenty of explosions. It gives the reader an idea of some tangent perspectives these stories could have told, but didn’t. That was the wisest choice in writing I have ever seen.
It would have been easy for the author to sate some readers’ desires enough to keep them coming (pun intended), however Dinniman kept it just clean enough to acknowledge the possibility is there, but this story isn’t. I applaud the road taken.
The main character – Carl’s rare combination of sardonic optimism, a moral compass, and frankly his bat-sh** craziness successfully meld into this guy that evolves into just wanting justice for everything done to his – and many other worlds.
I’m hooked, and have already purchased The Butcher’s Masquerade. It’s window is open, and I will hit play as soon as this review is complete. So… I think I’m done with the raving. Time for the next floor!
