What can I say that hasn’t already been said? I’ve put more hours into this series (audiobook versions, because Jeff Hays is some kind of audiobook narrating demigod who has ruined other narrators for me) than any other single book series, and I have zero regrets. Dinniman’s writing is engaging and often hilarious, his characters are wonderful, the underlying story has kept me engaged for 138.5 freaking hours.

The editor in me says the books could be shorter and some side-stories missed, but that’s comparing to traditional novels, and all the sidequests are an element of the LitRPG genre. The only real complaint here is that it often feels like the first 95% of the books take place at a leisurely pace and then everything gets wrapped up super-quickly in the last 5%.

But I’m hooked enough that I’m considering subscribing to Matt’s Patreon just so I can read book 8’s chapters while he’s in progress writing it. Amazingly fun series.
