Prior to reading this novel, I had read Mark Goodwin’s “American Exit Strategy” which was a superb Post-Historical Fiction Novel. After that novel, I struggled with “Behold Darkness and Sorrow” because its story is so much slower paced. It took 19 chapters for the main conflict to manifest. In “American Exit Strategy,” the main conflict gets rolling in the first few chapters.
I still enjoyed the story and characters of “Behold Darkness and Sorrow” even though it was very slow.
Also, this novel safely falls under Christian Fiction since God is presented as the main driver of the conflict and story. Other works of Fiction by Goodwin have Christian elements but not as drivers of the story.
I like Mark Goodwin a lot. He is both a good writer and a good Christian writer. I was surprised at how slow the progress of the plot was it “Behold Darkness and Sorrow” as it did take away from the enjoyment for me.
Those looking for a more Preper-flavored novel should instead read his Economic Collapse Series which starts with “The American Exit Strategy.”
