This scenario would make sense if the whole world had been attacked by aliens, but the this was only the US and a s bad as it was where is Canada, Mexico, and NATO, et.al. They would quickly be mobilized to provide emergency supplies, generators, etc. If you can get past that inconsistency, the story seems quite realistic as to how quickly society would fall apart if electricity and fuel oil suddenly stopped being produced and available. Makes you think about how prepared you are for a major disaster.
