Sherwood and Drake launch the Wings ‘N’ Wands series with a setup that takes the Scales ‘N’ Spells dragon-and-mage formula somewhere more emotionally specific: Sam’s broken core gives the fated-mates premise actual stakes, turning what could be a straightforward romance into something with a genuine obstacle at its center. Dimitri’s gruff protectiveness is a recognizable Sherwood type, but the authors deploy him with enough self-awareness that the dynamic stays fresh, and the booby-trapped ruins of the Sousa clan give the adventure thread real momentum. The commitment to communication over manufactured miscommunications is notably refreshing in a genre that too often relies on a pacing crutch. It’s a warm, propulsive opener that delivers everything the series premise promises and earns its place as the strongest entry in the trilogy.
