Simon Carr is an absolute master of sarcasm, satire, and general skewering of – well – everything. Saint Frank and the Dragon is funny, absurd, and a rollicking good time. Nothing and no one is safe. Religion, misogyny, generational differences, slackers, royalty/leaders, “merry” men…all fair game, and there are plenty of (maybe) sexual innuendos and references to bodily functions, too. To sum it up, it seems the author had a great time writing this book, and I think most readers will enjoy it, too. However, the overly sensitive and easily offended may want to pass. You probably won’t get it anyway.
The narration is fantastic. It’s like he is in the author’s mind, and knows all the characters. I can’t imagine I would have enjoyed the story nearly as much if I read it myself. The narrator is that good, especially with all the asides that are part of the story.
I hope there is another book about Saint Frank in the works. He has another quest and so many questions to answer.
