Overall, it’s ok. It’s not a book to be taken seriously and provides mild entertainment. Definitely not the worst in the genre.
As for what I did not like:
Another edgy MC.. Not at first but it’s what he slides towards and eventually becomes. I’m just sick of them.
Then the cursing. It’s silly and is over used. Cursing only really comes up when MC is bantering with Dove and after the first half of the book this banter can be skipped because it’s just filler.
And speaking of skipping, any technical work regarding necromancy can also be skipped. It gets extremely annoying to listen to the filler meandering so by the second book and I found myself skipping it. And if I could skip it all without consequences, then, in my opinion, it shouldn’t have been added.
There was not a lot of effort put into editing this. The kindle version has blatant keyboard sneezing, spacing issues and wrongly used capitalization. In the audio book, there are several points where the same word is used back to back creating an awkward flow.
As for the actual plot, it seems to have been changed several times on the fly. The story seems to be foreshadowing one thing only for you to arrive at an event that doesn’t quite fit with the prior information. This speaks to a lack of a story board and, again, editing. For instance necromancer Akron the Black was stopped by cutting off his head. Then in book 3 it’s mentioned that oh yeah he’s a lich. You didn’t know that? Well …you can’t kill a lich by cutting off its head so the author must have changed his mind. This happens often.
