Kerberos crafted (pun intended) a card-based progression series that I’ve shunned in the past. The MC starts the story as very old, low-tiered adventurer with a very rough and labored voice and then through an horrific event, finds himself spun back in time as a teen; essentially getting a Do-Over along with retaining all the knowledge over his long past life.
From there, the MC’s voice was still that of an older adult but much more clearer to understand. The story lightly touches on the time-travel butterfly effect where changing the past has ramifications on the paths of him and others from what had occurred. Book 1 mostly exposes some minor changes but suggests that these will snowball into larger consequences in the future. There are a number of interesting characters, some troubled and several elites who, as elites do, lord over those who aren’t.
There’s lots of intrigue, significant brutality and fascinating card skills and spells.
I’m writing this review just before the end of Book 1 and have already purchased Book 2 so I can continue to enjoy the evolving saga.
Jeff Hays performance is well done, as to be expected, even given this voice tenor is somewhat different from his other performances.
