Strike one: No motivation (or any kind of defining characteristics) for the main character. I’ve read and enjoyed other stories which had this problem to begin with, but it’s still a mark against it.
Strike two: Characters are idiots. this is also a common and forgivable sin, but this book takes it to incredible levels. we’ve got people eagerly barging into a brand new, unexplored dungeon with no preparation or caution, like they’re running into Disney World.
Strike three: A character shows up with an absolutely horrendous, ear-piercing voice. This was around a quarter of the way into the book, and I was already barely maintaining interest. It was the last straw
