a bit like The Road (McCarthy) except far more uplifting; things actually sometimes go right and it’s not quite so desolate and hopeless, and even though it shows some of the worst sides of humanity it also shows the good in people too.

it’s pretty wholesome: the father-son relationship, the way Ben and Joel take in Ally non-creepily and remain non-creepy, the way they learn to work together and appreciate little things, the way they all treat Gunner, the other good people they meet, etc.

ugh i got so attached to those characters and so now im sad that the book ended!! 10/10 recommend this book
