In this version of the apocalypse the decent into violent chaos is rather quick. There are good guys and bad guys – the bad guys are a cartoonish collection of racists, rapists and power hungry pols. The good guys know how to handle guns. They are NCOs and good country folk. City folk, on the other hand, rapidly become a seething mass of useless zombies who are unable to help themselves when the power goes out. I still loved it – there’s a lot of well thought through detail of what could happen if indeed humans’ pro social tendencies are trumped by a murderous desire to survive at all costs. A thing that bugged me is the regularity with which many of the characters ask “is that clear?” at the end of a set of instructions – maybe a US military thing? If you have to keep asking, you should probably change the way you do briefings.
