When I first started this book, I was extremely excited for the next chapter of our favorite Boxxy T. Morningwood. However, I was quite taken aback by the somewhat jarring narration by Annie Ellicott. Her range was fine, if, as I said, jarring at first. The quality of her recording, however, was not up to snuff. I hate to say it, but she sounded far worse in the quality of her microphone and recording than the clarity that Jeff Hays uses. Whether this is due to the studio she is using, the equipment, or the post-production editing, I cannot say, but I will say that I hope the next books fix this “hollow” sound that she brings.
The quality does seem to improve somewhat. That, or I just got used to it. Readdressing her range and the quality of her actual voice acting, she is absolutely on Jeff Hays’ level. She brings the new female cast to life, adding an excellent breadth to the book and embodying the spirit of each character wholly.
Finally, the continued use of sound effects by Soundbooth Theater was fantastic, adding not too much distraction and background noise, but expanding the fields of battle and the effect of magic on the world. This truly immerses you in the book while not taking away from the narration nor drowning out the dialogue. Truly, this series should be a must-read for any fans of LitRPG, especially those fantasy fans looking for an excellent story filled with mild adult themes and a great use of humor.
