If you could sum up While the City Slept in three words, what would they be?
Sorry, I can’t play a game with a book like this. This story tore me apart. Just the facts are enough to break my heart, but the author’s telling is done with precision and never with a heavy hand.
What was the most compelling aspect of this narrative?
Just brilliant. Not overly anything. Perfectly understated without being flat at all. Rene Ruiz told a story that ripped my heart out without being melodramatic.
Which scene was your favorite?
Um, no scene. It’s a terrible story that needs to be told so we can have fewer terrible stories.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
This should not be a movie.
Any additional comments?
This book is why I love audiobooks. I was crying too much to have really read the hard copy and, when something is this emotionally heavy, I need to be able to walk around or the weight of it can become too much.
