The centennial tournament is greatest piece of literature I have read in the last 5years, rivaled only by one of the red rising series books. The culmination of world building in this third episode of the saga we are again forced to reckon with the path to power each individual must take to survive. Does the internal sense of self promote or deter your greatest possible future? Have you overcome your past and the fractures to your understanding of reality enough impose your will upon the world without becoming an insane tyrant? Ryun and Zach continue to be parallel mirrors trying to shake off the death of their world and capture the meaning of the new one. Incredible fight scenes based discussions of honor, responsibility, and capability. Not only are the unique titling and power systems intriguing but also, the depth of the cast of characters wraps readers in a six degree of separation that compels us to read more. Characters are connected by deep, rich, complicated, history, and intimate bonds to themselves and their power. All conflicts pushed the strength and weakness of those bonds which made the outcome satisfying. Little to no plot armor. Resolutions aren’t so neat they feel forced or boring but not so messy they feel unresolved. This work embodies the “dungeon” “system/framework” ethos of designing challenges that may require sacrifice, extremely creative thinking due to its toughness , but there is always a chance. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and the question it poses through the powerful characters. As well as the questions that come from listening to how each individual gains their power and the intersection of how they use it.
