At first, I wasn’t sure I would like the main character, Cybil. She seemed a bit of a “Karen.” But with each letter, as each layer of the onion was pulled back, I grew to love her. Like all of us, Cybil is not one set of characteristics or qualities. She is human which by definition means she’s complex. Kind and selfless in some ways. Stubborn and withdrawn in others. Fierce and feisty. Yet soft and regretful. It is how I imagine I will reflect upon my life when the time comes — a set of contradictions with (hopefully) some good arcs and through lines throughout. Now that I know Cybil’s story, she will stay with me, like a dear friend, for years to come.
