I’ve been waiting for many months and was thrilled when I saw it finally show up in Audible.com. I wasn’t disappointed and generally enjoyed the book but I was hoping for something less predictable. There was the usual encounters with other mages challenging Damien’s abilities and authority and the subsequent near death encounters along with the political intrigue along the way but most of the characters, including Damien, seemed less interesting than in the previous books. Even the main antagonist was simple to determine very early on.

With that said, the writing was still very fluid and the narration still well recited (except for a nit with Damien sounding demanding and slightly arrogant even when he intended his declarations are meant to sound soft.)
