Spoiler. This book was a bit improbable. This went from everyday life to apocalypse before they could walk out of the mountains. 300 million people in America seemed to evaporate in 2 weeks. Blaming fires. War zones have more population density than this book. They say it was fires from the EMP but even if every house in America was set ablaze there should be more people than this book. There was barely enough time to get hungry before humans devolved into the hunger games. Crops dried up in 2 weeks? Weeds grew out of control and covered road signs in 2 weeks?. Why stop at gas stations instead of siphoning gas.
