Few books can be called depressing and good at the same time. While this is a rather sad chapter in this long series, it is very good like the others.

Ben is the most emotional capable soldier ever, constantly second guessing himself and being too soft. It’s almost unbearable. The stories are good but it seems like the author is trying too hard to cater to too many audiences.
The writing is obviously self published. The mix of modern technology like jets and communication devices mixed with fantasy samurai and water ending is too much. Obviously inspired by The Last Airbender. Didn’t care for the 14 year old struggling through school. or the mom of 5 children working on knitting and fish market. Bailed..

This series is tapping into the family aspect of the apocalypse genre. I like the story line and narrator has a smooth voice. it gets your blood boiling with every situation that arises.

Without spoilers – I liked the major twist a lot and thought it was great how that was dealt with (specifically the duel chapter) but the end of the story feels like it’s the first book of a trilogy. Final chapter easily sets up a minor antagonist and the plot twist in the middle sets..
Miller works hard at building up the story and various arcs and does an excellent job. Tell’s presentation and voices is also very good.
How natural and believable the storyline and action were throughout.

The cliffhangers were real. The sensitivity shown absolutely endearing. The author had good control of his characters and their responses.
I’d say this story is like a Naruto crossed with avatar the last Airbender meets samurai with modernism. There is quite a bit of influence from the first and second world war with the Japanese classic empire propaganda style influences. I’d say the entire story was fantastic— heart wrenching.
