This audiobook was beautifully brought to life by David Allen Vargo with the inclusion of music and sounds from the ’80s. Mr. Reed’s brillant writing allowed me to understand the feelings and emotions of what a gay man who was married and a a father experienced by acknowledging his sexual orientation. The time setting of..
This book was really interesting I enjoyed the way everything progressed how they all found themselves with hard decisions on their hands and had to push through the hard parts of life to reach a better outcome for themselves and the ones they cared about
This book should be added to the syllabi of courses covering LGBTQ life in the 1980s. Pair it with Randy Shilts’ And the Band Played On and some other works and one would have the facts of what it was like being, both closeted and out, in this period and a fictional portrait showing the..
Unraveling is an emotional, powerful, true to life story about self acceptance and discovery in the ’80s. Randy hid his true self when he got married to a woman and had a son. He can’t live this lie anymore and starts to explore his true self. When Randy meets John in Chicago’s Boystown the journey..
This is such a heartfelt story and absolutely feels like it comes from a place of personal insight and experience. Growing up I knew men like Randy, who were married to women [often for decades], and eventually gathered their courage and risked everything to come out. I found this book to be incredibly honest in..
Strap in — Unraveling is a rocky road. It’s rough and gritty and real. Seeming almost autobiographical without the polished sheen of a more typical romance novel, the HEA you eventually get leaves you sighing in relief while still feeling wrung out from the emotional journey of getting there. Set primarily in the 80’s, it..
I usually find my self enjoying stories by Rick R Reed and this one was not different. I appreciate the multiple points of view in this story and the great narration by David Allen Vargo only adds to the experience. I received an ARC and this is my unbiased opinion
I’m really not sure about this one-even after listening to the story. The consensual “cheating” kind of stuck with me and I had a hard time getting past it. The narrator was somewhat monotone in important parts and just overall not my favorite.
After reading the blurb, I assumed this was going to be an emotional read. There is quite a journey before the HEA. I thought the story and the characters were realistic, and the narrator did a good job giving each character a distinct voice.
