Got to chap 34 before I realized the last truly kind people in this story are the aunt and uncle. Even the priestesse the 3rd kindest person is manipulated by the Elder gods into serving them. Everybody else in this story serves their own goals in their own morally questionable ways. Nobody else does anything..
