So it took me until book 6 to realize that Jeff Hays does ALL THE VOICES. this blew my mind. He is incredible. The content of the book plus the production quality of soundbooth theater make this such a winning combination. Highly recommend!
Each book maintains my same level of interest and excitement. This story never gets old. I will continue to buy Matt’s books in this series.

It’s a pretty good cultivation story. I’ve read at least a dozen of books in this genre. It doesn’t have anything out of ordinary. But if you like cultivation books, I would recommend you giving it a go
Entertaining characters with a protagonist that invites the reader’s empathy. A solid, if a bit standard, bildungsroman plot. And an interesting world with a coherent magic system. The writing could use a better editor (e.g., “turbid air” shows up rather more often than is reasonable), but other than such writing tics, it’s clean and evocative.
The story definitely feels like it was inspired by a couple series I’ve heard of in part. But things go in their own direction while being well written and acted out to the point I don’t care, it’s just straight up good.
