Just finished this moving novel. All of the narrators were fantastic and brought the sad yet hopeful story to life. Thank you Virginia Evans.
The narration was the reason why the book was so incredible. Hearing the letters read, made it come even more alive.
I think overall this was a nice slow burn. I really enjoyed learning about all the relationships Sybil had, though I found it frustrating how she would intentionally correspond with strangers easier than her own children. I think it was all explained towards the end, which was a nice way to wrap up her life…
If I never hear the name Sybil Van Antwerp again, it will be too soon. I found her deeply unlikable—self-absorbed, obnoxious, and consistently selfish. She spends so much time fixating on other people’s lives that she repeatedly fails to show up for her own husband and children when it actually matters. Her treatment of both..
The writing and the performance were equally wonderful. I really felt like I knew all the characters, I could visualize them, which a great book should do. It’s been awhile since I enjoyed a book this much.
This was an incredible listen – end to end. Such a stunningly well constructed and written book. It just annoyed me so much that Felix Stone lives in Rue de LA papillon. It’s grammatically wrong, and Sybil would have been very annoyed about this, too.
The epistolary style of this book was annoying in the extreme to me and it is especially bad for an audiobook format!! Every reader goes thru the extreme detail of date, hour, minute, address or worse email address!! Who ever decides how to do an audiobook from a book needs to reexamine “unabridged” with this..
I loved this story so much and the narrators were amazing! I had a hard cover copy of the book and started reading that but went back to Audible because I missed the narrators.
