This is a weird one for me because it has some of my favorite moments in the Dungeon Crawler Carl series, but also one of my least favorite floor concepts so far.
I was not the biggest fan of the floor itself. I liked the card game side of it, and there were definitely parts of that system that worked, but the creature-collecting feel was just strange to me. It was not bad, and it still had the usual DCC creativity behind it, but it did not work for me the same way some of the previous floors did. It wasn’t bad, just not my jam.
That said, this book is still absolutely loaded with great moments. The humor is some of the best in the series, the quotes are fantastic, and there are scenes in this one that had me laughing out loud.
The audio production is ridiculous as always. Jeff Hays continues to prove why he is the best in the business, and the supporting voice work in this one is a huge standout. The added performance gives certain scenes even more personality and makes the audiobook feel bigger without taking away from what Jeff already does so well.
Keep going. get to the next floor.
