This is one of those books where the stakes feel almost unbearable. If the crawl already felt dangerous before, this book somehow finds a way to make it feel even worse. I was nervous for basically every character the entire time.
The story is incredible. The brutality, the heart, the world building, the subplots, and the emotional weight all hit hard. There are moments in this one that are hilarious, moments that are completely brutal, and moments that left me with complete and utter depression over what just happened.
And of course, the audio production continues to be ridiculous. Jeff Hays is still the best in the business, and at this point that feels like an understatement. His ability to carry the humor, panic, rage, heartbreak, and complete insanity of this series is unmatched. The performance makes every character feel alive, which also makes every horrible thing that happens hurt even more.
This Inevitable Ruin is brutal, emotional, hilarious, and massive. It is Dungeon Crawler Carl operating at an absurdly high level, and it had me hooked the entire way through.
Keep going…just maybe emotionally prepare yourself first.
