Where does In Milady’s Chamber rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
For escapism this is high up on my listener’s list. I mentioned a positive comparison with Bruce Alexander’s “John Fielding” series in my previous review of the introduction novella of this series “Pickpocket’s Apprentice”. This series – John Pickett is far lighter, but still imparts the feel of the time frame it takes place in.
What other book might you compare In Milady’s Chamber to and why?
Others in this series obviously. And the aforementioned John Fielding series.
Which character – as performed by Joel Froomkin – was your favorite?
The same answer I gave for Pickpocket… There are two, young John Pickett and his benefactor, Magistrate Patrick Colquhoun. This a good place to mention the great performance of Joel Froomkin! Unique voice to each character both the primary ones and supporting cast. To this untrained American ear, fantastic accent and pronunciation. Engaging pace to the story. There is a bit of a “strain” in my opinion of the female voicing. That’s a minor thing though.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The society differences. The social soirees. The meeting between Pickett and the recently widowed Lady Fieldhurst.Could she be a murderess…?
Any additional comments?
This is a enjoyable, light work of historic and mystery fiction. I think it appeals to me since I enjoy both of those areas of fiction.
