AudioBook Review:
Stars: Overall 4 Narration 4 Story 4
It has been a while since I read a shifter story, and the rules for these are a little different from my usual fare. Knowing that I would have to have a healthy dose of ‘go with it’ for some of the more fantastical moments, I was curious to see just what would happen. I’ve heard good things about Jodi Vaughn’s writing, so the chance was one I jumped at.
As an introductory story, it did provide some of the background and world building needed to understand this author’s creation stories and mythologies. While I found that some of the questions I had going in were still unanswered at the end, the story did manage to create a world where I could see this pack surviving and thriving.
In this story, Ava is the one to discover, when after her kidnapping she discovers both the existence of shifters and her own connections to them. With her own rather smart-ass attitude and a touch of immaturity, she isn’t shocked more than the time it would take to change shoes. In fact, her entire thought process circles around, too frequently, her attraction to Damon the pack’s guardian.
For his part: Damon is pretty solid he-man alpha mine-mine-mine sort of guy, willing to give Ava a bit of space and time, but even with the threats and danger from the rogue wolves, he can’t really stop his own obsessive thinking.
Together – this is a wild ride: lots of danger, angst, twists and plenty of sexual tension – tension that strings everyone (from characters to readers) tighter than a bow string. There’s plenty to love even with the loose ends and unanswered questions, and the action here is non-stop. While I didn’t find myself desperate to finish the story, I also wasn’t counting the minutes or pages until the end.
Narration is provided by Jeffrey Kafer, there’s an interesting growly ‘America’s Most Wanted’ tenor to his voice, adding nicely to the tension. Clearly distinguishing the male and female voices without overacting or sounding too comical, Kafer provides a nice balance that keeps the listener engaged and listening.
A nice mix of tension, action, steam and push-pull between the couple in this solidly southern tinged story: sure to please those wanting a bit of different in their romance.
I received an AudioBook copy of the title from the author for purpose of honest review. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions and expectations are my own responsibility.
