If you’ve been debating (as I was) whether to read the book in hardcover or listen to the audio, take my word for it, words on the page could never match the texture offered by the voice of each character. Granted, the author’s work is brilliant. It may be one of the best books I’ve read (er, listened to) in maybe 10 years or more. But combined with the best performance of each letter writer, it is the best audiobook I’ve ever listened to; and I’ve enjoyed many. From the primary letter writer, Sybil, all the way through her cast of correspondents, each was excellent and created a sense of familiarity to the story. And what a story it is. Evans has taken her character (a true protagonist in every sense of the word) through the gamut of transformation, one understanding at a time, through letters sent and received. Truly a magnificent work.
