When I first was discovering the wonders of an iPad and Audible Inc., I was a runaway user inhaling new books, authors, and series. I didn’t retain much of what I read but then that’s the beauty of books. They can be reread or relistened to whenever. After listening to Man of War I think I need to make that journey like I did in 2006 and take my time to savor the delightful menu M. R. Forbes presents! Man of War is action with a purpose and wrapped around a tale of how humanity digs in when the only other choice is to give up. The pathos of War develops strong characters, reluctant leaders, and the usual percentage of snivilers and cowards. Author Forbes creates these so-o realistic individuals and then keeps them busy in little plots and a Plot that is full of action, drama, and all the good things that keep the listener riveted. Jeff Hays gives an almost stellar performance especially the wily Cajun Commander who provides all the momentum and direction that powers the plot. Jeff would have taken home the Oscar if not for a couple of “flat” spots where he was almost monotone in his delivery. But don’t fear, it doesn’t ruin a very good book. It’s too late for the sale but a credit is still a bargain for Man of War!
