I’ve always enjoyed the scifi story telling by JM and was curious to see this new side of her writing. Unfortunately, this romantasy story fell a bit flat for me. The author uses overdone tropes, overly focused on the romance with a lack of depth in the political intrusive (which she usually does better) and a really annoyingly helpless FMC. It feels forced and very unlike the author. The world building is just interesting enough that I might hesitantly pick up the next installment but this has been a disappointment. Also the male narrator gives the FMC the most infantilizing and annoying voice -I cannot understand how this was cast. The female narrator was excellent and saved the book for me.
