I started the series reading the books. Then switched to the audiobooks so I could multitask. But it’s been a struggle and certain character voices feel cringe and so unlike what I had imagined. I let it go thinking maybe I would adjust but I actually hate how some voices make certain characters seem cartoonish. And then I realized I don’t even enjoy how the FMC is voiced. There’s something about the way she speaks that started irritating me. As for all the MMCs they all sound the same. Many times I had to rewind back to the beginning of the chapter to know whose POV it was. And while I finished, it was a speed run on 1.5X just to get through it.
Then the last part when the action is really ramping up totally threw me off. The FMC’s and MMCs’ naïveté, cluelessness, refusal to see or acknowledge clues thrown in their faces was awful. Not sure I would have finished if it weren’t for the fact this was background noise. I honestly couldn’t tell you exactly what happened because I stopped caring. Ugh.
What are these geniuses going to do to get themselves out of the quagmire they walked themselves into? Do I even care? Not really. How did these books get such good review ratings?
