I went into this one completely blind and it ended up being a really solid read that I did not expect to enjoy as much as I did.
Dungeon Crawler Carl by Matt Dinniman follows Carl and his cat Donut as they navigate a deadly, televised dungeon crawl after an apocalyptic event levels the world above them. It is chaotic and weird and surprisingly easy to get invested in.
The humor is what stood out to me most. This book made me laugh out loud multiple times, genuinely, which does not happen often. It is sharp and consistent without ever feeling like it is trying too hard, and that balance keeps the story fun without losing momentum.
As someone who plays video games, I was also curious how the RPG elements would land. Achievements, stats, class systems, leveling mechanics, all of it is woven into the story in a way that feels natural rather than gimmicky. More importantly, it is written accessibly. You do not need to be a gamer to understand or appreciate any of it, and I think that was a deliberate and smart choice on Dinniman’s part.
The character development is genuine and earned, and the plot stays engaging throughout. Carl and Donut are a great duo and I found myself rooting for them in a way I was not expecting going in.
This is a fun, fresh read that does not take itself too seriously while still delivering a story worth investing in.
