I read the first one of this series and was hooked. (I haven’t stopped long enough to write a review until now).
Basically in the first book they accidentally anger the local mafia. It’s a tension underlying each book. And it is a bit more intense with this book. (I really appreciate that there is some realism in that the local “family” doesn’t just give up and go home. Each defeat is costly. )
Each story is unique and thread together seamlessly. Each couple fight to first communicate then to survive.
Love Grey and Monroe. Monroe is a fighter- she was trained for war- only war. Nothing soft in her childhood home. (Like Grey says over and over “Her dad is the worst”).
She has no clue that protecting the woman you love is just what a man in love does. Protecting WHO you love is just what you do. (Again, her dad is the worst). She really has no clue about a lot of things (other than how to kill a person in like 50 different ways).
Grey has Ioved her from their very beginning. He just literally thought she was never going to be any closer to him. (She had something to do with that). So he tried to fill that hole in his heart in all the wrong ways. Unfortunately he really didn’t understand how that looked to everyone else, especially Monroe.
He is kind of floored when he realizes what everyone thought and believed. (Yeah, some of that is earned). But it wakes him up to what you have to do to show someone who doesn’t know relationships that you are hopelessly in love with her.
Spoiler alert:
I am very curious if we ever find out what really happened in that hotel. Seems to me like there are some big questions there that never got fully resolved.
And I am anxious to see how Wren justifies what she did. I liked her in the first book so I don’t hate her in this one. I guess I’ll have to wait until her and Evan’s’ book.
Creepy how pervasive the mafia is. How normal looking. How ruthless. I feel she has portrayed that pretty well here. And without gorey details.
This is a clean, closed door book. Not a lot of innuendos and no swearing. Death, suicide, abusive parent is all mentioned but mostly “off screen”. This is a well written edge of your seat good story
writing.

(Ok, ok, I can’t help but point out that if you call 911 and someone (or more than one someone) has been shot -especially if they are dead- and you are holding a gun. You can expect to be arrested until the authorities sort things out.
If those authorities have mafia ties it probably won’t end well for you. Just sayin.)
