It’s a fun story and well performed, but I can’t recommend it as a car trip book. If you have the volume set so you can hear the main character, there are sections where other characters are basically inaudible. For example, at the end of the first chapter, there is a long section where a narrator explains the entire premise of the situation—explaining to Carl what the dungeon is all about out—that you just cannot hear without cranking up the sound. If you’re listening with headphones this is a minor annoyance. If you have a carful of people having the adjust the sound every few minutes isn’t great. If you don’t turn the column back down at the right time, you get blasted with Carl’s voice when he takes over again. I find it incredible that a book this popular and successful has such awful, amateurish sound mixing. Hopefully they got their act together for other books in the series.
