I’ve been hearing about this series for years, and had even grabbed this first book during a sale or Daily Deal at some point, but it was only about a month ago that I actually started listening to it. And now I just finished the 7th book and am left eagerly waiting the release of the 8th next month. Tons of reviews and litrpg ranking posts rave about how hilarious the series is, but it is SO much more than that. This series has serious heart and will hit you straight in “the feels.” The main characters care about each other and they care about others. It’s a very human story underneath a layer of dark humor.
Yes, I know we’ve all watched, read and listened to a ton of “trapped in a game” type stories, and the descriptive blurb sounds rather silly. Honestly, it never really seemed like it would be up my alley. That’s what kept me from giving it a try until now, and I’ve seen many other fans testify the same. But I promise you, this one is something special. As long as you can handle a level of irreverence, gore and raunchiness on par with something like the Deadpool movies, PLEASE give this one a try. You might just find yourself buying a pack of 5 credits so you can catch up ASAP like me, heh heh.
The performance by Jeff Hays is among the best I’ve heard in any audiobook, if not THE best. He has a terrific range and gives everyone a distinct voice, full of personality and life. You will most likely notice a bit of a soft echo in some parts of the books (not sure if it starts in the first book or later), which is disappointing, but it’s absolutely worth putting up with and not too hard to ignore.
TL;DR; The book is full of heart, not just humor. If I had known that I’d have given it a try years ago.
Now get out there and read, Read, READ! (Well, LISTEN, but that doesn’t work as well XD )
