The idea of lit-RPG just seems ridiculous to me. I enjoy video games, and RPG’s are among my favorites … TO PLAY. The idea of listening to a book about a video game that I have no control over is just dumb. When I kept hearing that this transcended the genre and that the performance was outstanding, I figured I’d give it a try. The performance is indeed terrific; however, that does not save the book from the story itself. It’s lit-RPG, 100%. Unless that genre is even worse than I imagine (maybe it is), I cannot see how this transcends it in any way. While it may be the best in breed, it is still lit-RPG. If listening to a book about inventory descriptions, lists of stats, and loot box contents is your thing, well this is probably right up your alley, but don’t buy into the hype, it does not transcend the genre in any way.
