So I may be a little partial to grittier post-apocalyptic stories, I feel like they are more realistic. I’ve listened to a lot of the more popular prepper-oriented ones, like hundreds of hours. I realize that’s not for everyone, so this story fills a niche, I’m sure. It’s good for what it is, and it’s definitely good enough for a free listen if you get the opportunity. Especially with the number of hours in the box set. Pretty clean, which I liked. No seedy scenes, which I liked. And the “good” characters were actually fairly well done and likeable, the “villains”…eh. The narrator was also actually pretty good once I got used to him, after listening to some gruffer-sounding ones lately.
But.
I felt like this was more of a romance story with the post-apocalyptic backdrop.
My nitpicks:
If you like a little detail into what gear the characters use, which I do like a little, you won’t get any of that. Everything is a “gun”, “pistol”, “shotgun” etc. And the military references are pretty much B-movie material. Way too many warning shots, shots to wound etc. in a time where ammo is limited, just not feasible, it sort of dilutes any desperation vibe.
In summary, if you want a post-apocalyptic love story that’s not overly macho with sanitized violence, then you’ll like this. Or if you’re into this genre and need a “filler” listen, try to get the box set for free. Just be prepared to yell at the characters for being sort of wishy-washy at times.
