Carl’s Doomsday Scenario is a worthy successor to the first book, delivering the same clever plotting, witty banter, and addictive storytelling that made me fall for this series. Watching Carl, Donut, Mortichai, and the rest of the cast grow and advance through the dungeon levels is genuinely satisfying — I’m fully invested in these characters and wherever this wild ride is taking us. The underlying story keeps thickening in the best way, with plot lines that build on each other in ways that feel both surprising and earned.
A special mention has to go to narrator Jeff Hayes — the man is a master of his craft. Every character has a completely distinct voice, and his performance is nothing short of mesmerizing. Listening to this on audio genuinely elevates the experience.
It lands just a hair below book one for me, but only just — this is still a 4.5-star read that kept me hooked. Fair warning: if dungeon-crawling, game mechanics, and D&D-style worldbuilding aren’t your thing, you might hesitate. But Dinniman’s storytelling is strong enough that it might just convert you anyway.
